Interview: TOMS X Prabal Gurung

Nepal native and New York-based designer Prabal Gurung has teamed up with TOMS to design a collection of shoes that give back in a big way. On top of their buy one, give one credo, TOMS is vowing to donate an additional $5 of every purchase from the special fashion collaboration to the Shikshya Foundation Nepal.

 I assume you wear the shoes, what kind of reactions do you get?

I’m actually getting them in the coming days.  Very much looking forward to it and I’ll let you know the reactions when I have them!

 Why did you accept the invitation from Toms?

I have always admired the TOMS brand and what it stands for.  It was built on the foundation of giving back and paying it forward.  It’s certainly a partner we’re proud to have.

Did you know Toms before they asked you?

Of course.  I was very familiar with the brand when the conversation started and was hoping to at some point work with them.  The conversation started soon after the earthquake in Nepal as both brands were looking for ways to raise awareness and bring attention to the country.

 Why is Toms different compared to other good causes? ­

TOMS was really one of the first of it’s kind.  Of course many have since found ways to give back to the betterment of humanity in some shape or form but they did this when it was not as often a part of a brand’s DNA.    

The shoes match with the Prabal Gurung style, how important was this for you?

It was very important that we offer a range of product that speaks to our brand’s DNA – the design detailing, the graphic appeal, timelessness, and so on.  We make sure we do that for all of our partnerships and collaborate closely with our partners along the way.

You grew up in Nepal, what is your most fond memory of the country?

I’d have to say that what continues to inspire me, particularly in a professional sense, are the colours and textures seen throughout the country.  It is a land so vibrant and in many ways untouched by mankind, which is something we rarely seen in the western world.  But so many fond memories and I love going back each year to make more.
